Oxford Dictionary declared ‘locavore’ word of the year in 2007. Two years prior four women in San Francisco encouraged residents to try to consume only food grown or produced within a 100-mile radius. Since then, the locavore movement has spread nationwide with many now embracing the value of growing one’s own food, eating only what is seasonally available, and/or purchasing from local farmers’ markets.
Those who frequent fresh food markets can verify the freshness and superior taste of homegrown compared to what is available in chain grocery stores. In addition to better tasting food, the nutritional content is also better. And, of course, buying locally helps the local economy and has a positive environmental impact.
