Why Mussels Matter

On a brisk October morning in 2023, biologists with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium (NMRM&A) aquarists, officials with the U.S. Geological Survey, and a group of dedicated volunteers bent over silt-cover trays freshly pulled from Dubuque’s Ice Harbor to recover juvenile mussels. Some of the mussels will be used to support research on the invasive zebra mussel while others were moved to the Genoa National Fish Hatchery in Genoa, Wisconsin, where they will grow large enough to be tagged and seeded into other waterways.
