December in Iowa not only gives us colder weather and lots of snow, but also plenty of nostalgia and a wide range of opportunities to celebrate the season. Dubuque is lucky to have a variety of art centered organizations that bring energy and joy to the holiday season through performances of many kinds.
University of Dubuque’s Heritage Center is always brimming with music, laughter, and good tidings. UD kicks off the 2023 holiday season on Friday, December 1st at 7:30 pm with its presentation of “All The Souls on Earth Shall Sing” in the John and Alice Butler Hall. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts celebrates Christmas through a concert presentation featuring the John and Alice Butler Pipe Organ, UD choirs, and UD Concert Band with live narration. The University of Dubuque hopes that this tradition will bring spiritual meaning to the Christmas season for Dubuquers of all ages.
On Tuesday, December 5th, the nationally acclaimed acting group Troupe America, Inc., brings holiday laughter and cheer to the Heritage Center with “Away in the Basement: A Church Ladies Christmas.” Set in 1959, the show begins on the day of the Sunday School Christmas Program. As the children rehearse upstairs in the sanctuary, the ladies of the kitchen are finishing up the goodie bags and putting final touches on the Nativity pieces. Little do they know what surprises are in store for them as they are called upon to, once again, step in and save the day. Troupe America was founded in 1987 and has received many accolades for their “Church Ladies” series of plays.
