Dubuque Symphony Orchestra Revives the Ageless Story of Star-Crossed Lovers

Star-Crossed Lovers returns, by popular demand, to the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra’s Classics lineup this February. This dramatic retelling of the Romeo and Juliet story debuted in the spring of 2018, to great acclaim.

Shakespeare’s ill-fated romance is retold using a pair of actors and a pair of opera singers—each portraying Romeo and Juliet—handing off the roles to each other, while the orchestra fills out the story with music from Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Gounod, Bernstein, and Florence Price.

Sarah Harmann

Actor and Director Sarah Hartmann returns as Juliet in the performances. Aidan Ziegler-Hansen debuts as Romeo.

Dubuque native soprano Megan Gloss returns singing the role of Juliet. This year, Gloss celebrates her 15th consecutive season as a company vocalist with Madison (Wis.) Opera, where she has performed in more than 20 operatic productions. Finding second homes there and in Chicago, she also has performed with Madison’s Fresco Opera and Four Seasons theaters and studies with Jerad Mosbey, of the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Dubuque native tenor Eric Ferring will make his DSO Debut. Ferring recently made his Metropolitan Opera debut in the 2021-2022 season singing Pong in Turandot, followed by Tamino in The Magic Flute, and Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor, among others.

“This is a truly unique concert experience that is part opera, part play, part concert, and very dramatic,” shares Music Director and Conductor William Intriligator.  “It will be so moving to audiences! This is also a really great way to treat your special someone for Valentine’s weekend!”

Performances will be held at 7:30 PM Saturday, February 10 and 2:00 PM Sunday, February 11 at Five Flags Theater, downtown Dubuque. Tickets (starting at $20) are available through the Five Flags Box Office, or DubuqueSymphony.org (purchase direct at the box office to avoid Ticketmaster online fees). $10 student tickets are available at the theater ticket counter one hour prior to each performance, based on availability – be prepared to show a student ID.
