It’s All Greek to me!

“Wine: Beneficial Beverage, Tasty Medicine, and Pleasant Food.”

Quote by Plutarch – Greek Platonist philosopher, historian, biographer, and priest at the Temple of Apollo in Delphi

TeamWine, with two new members, traveled virtually to Greece via two wines. A white, Retsina and a Paranga red blend. Cultivated grapes in Greece can be traced back to at least 2500 BC. A pottery jar discovered in Crete dated back to 2200 BC and a wine press found in Palaikastro dates from the Mycenaean period (1600-1100 BC). While some will argue that Macedonia and Georgia are the regions of earliest cultivators of grapes and consumption of wine, Grecians were making wines at about the same time. The one holdover from ancient methods we found in this month’s wines is that Greeks still use pine resin as a flavor enhancer in the wine. This was very evident in the unique flavor of the Retsina. The Retsina wine we tasted was purchased at Sid’s Beverage Store here in Dubuque. The Paranga wine was bought at Table Wine located at 2301 Atwood Ave in Madison. WI.
