Take a sonic trip to Latin America with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra February 4-5 at Five Flags Theater. The DSO’s season continues with the third installment in its Classics Series titled “Birds Fly, We Dance”.
“I’m so excited to present this concert of Latinx music,” shares Music Director and Conductor, William Intriligator. “The orchestra will dance and sway with the rhythms and sounds of Latin-America! This program covers a wide range of styles including music by Brazilian, Argentinian, Mexican, and American composers.
“We will raise the roof when we combine with the youthful energy and adrenaline of the members of the Dubuque Symphony Youth Orchestra to perform Màrquez’ sensational Danzòn No. 2. This is one of my favorite pieces to conduct because it evokes so many moods, from touching nostalgia and wistfulness to high-energy dancing. Like the Màrquez, the Huapango by Moncayo, is a great example of Mexican classical music. Its joy is infectious.
“I’m also super excited finally to conduct the music of Gabriela Lena Frank, one of our most talented living composers. I’ve admired her music for years but haven’t performed it before now. Her Elegia Andina is a wonderful piece, also very moving. In it, our flute section gets to emulate Peruvian pan pipes at one point.
“Another piece I’ve never conducted before is the Sinfonía Buenos Aires by Piazzolla. This will be one of the main pieces on the concert, and I’m looking forward to having two bandoneóns players join the orchestra for this symphony The bandoneon is that larger accordian that provides a huge part of the traditional sound of Argentenian music.
“Our Winged and Wild season theme will certainly come through with Tico Tico, also known as Sparrow in the Cornmeal, and with the wild energy of so much of this music!”
