If you’re looking to enjoy nature, get some exercise, and see a truly unique geologic formation, the Horseshoe Bluff Trail is a great place to go. Located in the Mines of Spain, which also contains the Julien Dubuque Monument, Horseshoe Bluff Trail is part of a network of over 14 miles of hiking trails. Out of all these trails, Horseshoe Bluff easily has some of the most impressive views. The eponymous bluffs are composed of rocks (mostly limestone and dolomite) from the Ordovician period, are over 200 feet tall, and overlook the Mississippi River, though the bluffs do block your view of the river while hiking.
