Sinsinawa Mound Center hosts Kevin Koch as he presents “The Thin Places: A Celtic Landscape from Ireland to the Driftless” Saturday, March 14 from 2 to 4 PM. Participants will explore sacred places through Celtic tradition, photography, and reflective readings. This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
“The Thin Places” examines eight Celtic principles of sacred place through a visually rich photographic journey connecting landscapes in Ireland with those of the Driftless region of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. Interwoven with the images are brief, evocative readings from the author, inviting reflection on land, spirit, and belonging. Participants will be encouraged to discover—and share—their own experiences of “thin places,” where the boundary between the physical and the sacred feels especially close. After the program, participants are welcome to gather outdoors for a gentle stroll on the Sinsinawa grounds, offering an opportunity to “bring the work home.”
Kevin Koch is the author of The Thin Places: A Celtic Landscape from Ireland to the Driftless; Skiing at Midnight: A Nature Journal from Dubuque County, Iowa; The Driftless Land: Spirit of Place in the Upper Mississippi Valley; and Midwest Bedrock: The Search for Nature’s Soul in America’s Heartland. He is Professor Emeritus at Loras College, in Dubuque, where he taught in the English Department for 42 years. Learn more about the presenter at Kevinkochdriftlessland.net.
