The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and Dubuque Museum of Art (DUMA) are pleased to announce they will again be hosting the Color of Music art competition. This annual event serves to celebrate the strong ties within Dubuque’s rich arts community.
Theme
Entrants are asked to create an original piece of art using Sibelius’ Finlandia as inspiration. The DSO and Youth Orchestra will be performing this exciting piece side-by-side at Symphonic Landscapes concerts held February 28 & March 1, 2026, at Five Flags Theater.
There are Four Categories
Elementary school students (K-5), middle and high school students (grades 6-12), college students and adults, and photography (all ages). One winner and up to three honorable mentions will be chosen per category by local judges. The top four winners will receive 2 tickets to the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Symphonic Landscapes (Feb 28-Mar 1, 2026), and a family membership to the Dubuque Museum of Art. Winning art will also serve as cover art for the DSO’s Symphonic Landscapes concert program book.
New this year: selected works will also be displayed in person at the Dubuque Museum of Art’s The Color of Music Exhibition Friday, March 6, 2026, from 5-8PM at the Dubuque Museum of Art – 1000 Jackson St, Suite 105. All submissions will be featured digitally on-site and online.
Artwork Requirements
2-dimensional art only, on paper, canvas, or another similar flat surface. Acceptable materials include paint, crayons, pencil, pastels, mixed media, ink, etc. Photography and digital media also accepted. (only one entry per person).
