Ellen Henkels Exhibition The Great River Road Paintings at Quigley Gallery

Quigley Art Gallery at Clarke University will feature the work of Dubuque artist, Ellen Henkels from Friday, February 10 through March 18. Henkels received a BA degree in art from Clarke in 1974 and returned to Clarke to further her education, gaining her BFA degree in art in 1998.

The Great River Road Paintings exhibition will include 22 oil paintings of imagery in various locations with vistas of the Mississippi River. Henkel’s family immigrated from Austria, Germany and Liechtenstein and chose this region because of the proximity to the Mississippi. Five generations of the Henkels family have made this area their home since the 1850s, adding deep personal meaning to the artist’s choice of subject matter.

Ellen Henkels has been actively involved in the Dubuque arts community throughout her career, including serving as a teacher in Dubuque Community Schools, a member of the City of Dubuque Arts and Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission and her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions. Henkels was the recipient of a 2023 Artist Catalyst Grant, awarded by the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. This support funded the framing of paintings.

The exhibition will be open for viewing during the regular Quigley Art Gallery hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8 AM-4:30 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 PM. Admission is free.
