Nominations Sought For Historic Preservation Awards

The Dubuque County Historical Society, with the Dubuque County Preservation Commission, is seeking nominations from the community for their annual Historic Preservation Awards. Since 1975, these awards have recognized citizens of Dubuque County who have demonstrated a commitment to historic preservation through historically-sensitive restoration and preservation of their residential, commercial, or civic properties.

Historic properties in Dubuque County are eligible for the awards. To be considered, properties should be at least 50 years old and will be reviewed on criteria such as exterior construction materials; fenestration (windows); architectural details appropriate to the original design of the building; compatibility of the color scheme; alterations or additions to the structure; and appropriateness of the surrounding grounds to the original design of the building. Property owners can nominate their own buildings or nominations can be submitted on behalf of neighbors, friends, and others who have researched and thoughtfully restored an historic property.

Past honorees are listed at rivermuseum.com/historic-preservation-awards and have been located in Cascade, Dubuque, Dyersville, Farley, Sherrill, and other local communities.

The deadline for nominations is February 1, 2020, and winning properties will be honored at an awards ceremony in the spring. Nominations should include the names of the owners, address, basic information about the restoration, historical significance of the property, and photos. Nominations can be submitted online at rivermuseum.com/historic-preservation-awards or in paper format to: Victoria Cote, Dubuque County Historical Society, 350 East 3rd St., Dubuque, IA 52001.
