DuRide provided their 100,000th ride on Tuesday, March 19.
DuRide was founded in 2008 to serve people 65 and older in Dubuque, Asbury, and East Dubuque who needed help with transportation. DuRide now serves 291 members and provides an average of over 1,000 rides a month. Volunteers use their own vehicles to provide door to door, one to one rides, and have donated approximately 42,000 hours and driven over 550,000 miles. Rides are provided 365 days a year, including all weekends and holidays.
One hundred and seventy six volunteers are currently active, and more volunteers are needed as demand continues to grow. A waiting list of over 20 new members exists, pending additional volunteers. No special license, training, or insurance is required. A background check is conducted.
Volunteers decide literally on a daily basis what they can do, if anything. A typical ride takes about 20 minutes. A typical volunteer provides six rides per month, some more, some less. Volunteering for DuRide fits any schedule.
