The American Red Cross of Northeast Iowa, along with corporate sponsors AY McDonald, Crescent Electric Supply Co., Dupaco Community Credit Union, Happee Smith Productions, Holiday Inn Downtown Dubuque, KWWL, Mediacom, Radio Dubuque, and US Bank want to congratulate five locals as the 2019 Everyday Heroes of Northeast Iowa.
These outstanding individuals have demonstrated courage, compassion and unselfish character, performing extraordinary acts of heroism in the eyes of their neighbors and community.
- Angie Hohmann: Turning tragedy into triumph, Angie Hohmann started a nonprofit called Live Like Jack after her son unexpectedly lost his life in November of 2014. The organization is the first of its kind in Dubuque, offering free support to children who have lost a sibling. Live Like Jack also distributes Thanksgiving blessing bags – an event that has provided more than 650 meals the past three years to families in need during the holidays. In addition to the nonprofit, Angie volunteers 40 hours a week at Resources Unite, running the office and volunteer activities.
- Jaida Kramer: Jaida Kramer, wants to study nursing so she can help people. In January of 2018, she was seated in her vehicle in Dubuque when she witnessed a freshman boy get hit by a car while crossing the street. Jaida rushed to tend to the victim and performed CPR until emergency responders arrived. Jaida stayed on the scene, assisting emergency personnel during the primary and secondary surveys and stayed by the boy’s side until he was transported to Iowa City.
- James Deckert: James Deckert was leaving a convenience store in Dubuque on Easter morning when he witnessed a man attacking a woman in the parking lot. The woman had been strangled and stabbed multiple times. James intervened, pulling the man off the woman, preventing any further harm and injury. Authorities said that without his quick actions and medical treatment, her sustained wounds could have been fatal.
- Jeremy Hillers and Philip Moser: Ten-year-old Carter Hillers of Colesburg was helping his father move machinery when the tractor he was driving lost control, rolled over, and pinned him. His father, Jeremy Hillers, was following behind and yelled for his neighbor, Philip Moser, to retrieve his front loader machine. Phillip worked to unpin Carter and Jeremy was able to free his son and take him to the hospital. Due to Jeremy and Phillip’s quick thinking they were able to get Carter to the hospital in time. Carter eventually made a full recovery from his internal injuries.
Everyday Heroes are nominated by their peers to be recognized for going above and beyond in service to others. Heroes will be honored at this year’s Everyday Heroes of Northeast Iowa Breakfast event on March 14, 7:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn. The event is the area’s major fundraiser for the Red Cross.
