Sinsinawa Mound Center invites young explorers ages 7 to 14 to step into the wonders of the natural world Monday, August 10 from 8 AM to 1 PM for our Wild Wonders Nature Camp. Participants will discover connections between forests, soil, plants, and creatures that call the Mound home during this hands-on adventure. Through outdoor exploration, science-based activities, and creative expression, campers will learn how to observe and appreciate the world around them.
Camp stations include Forest Discovery: A Guided Sensory Hike with Mike Hensely, Soil Detectives with Julia Gerlach and Rick Bieber, and Sun Prints: Capturing Nature’s Beauty with Laura Lopez. Mike is the land stewardship manager at Sinsinawa Mound and will lead campers through the woods as they learn about plant and forest ecology while slowing down to notice sights, sounds, textures, and scents of the natural world. Juila and Rick lead the Fields of Sinsinawa initiative at the Mound and will take participants on an outdoor adventure exploring regenerative farming practices, live cover crops, and GPS-guided cow grazing. They will also hunt for earthworms, discover beneficial insects, and test soil health. Laura is an art teacher and will assist campers in creating their own works of art using natural materials collected from the Mound grounds. Participants should bring a water bottle and packed lunch (optional). Comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking and hiking are encouraged. Parents and guardians are welcome to stay during the program and for the optional picnic lunch (bring your own) after the camp.
Sinsinawa Mound, an event center and Motherhouse of the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters in Wisconsin, is about five miles northeast of Dubuque and 10 miles northwest of Galena, Ill. The main entrance is located at the intersection of County Roads Z and ZZ.
