Watercolor Art Exhibit at Sinsinawa Mound

Join us July 7 to August 28 for an art exhibit at Sinsinawa Mound Center titled, What the Water Remembers: The Watercolors of Sister Stephanie Stauder, OP (1918–2010), which celebrates the life, artistry, and spiritual vision of an accomplished artist. Featuring selections from the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation’s collection, the exhibition highlights Sister Stephanie’s mastery of watercolor and her lifelong exploration of both realism and abstraction. An Opening Reception will be held on Tuesday, July 7 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM with a Gallery Talk by Sister Priscilla Wood, OP, at 5:30.

Sister Stephanie was born in 1918 and raised in Decatur, Ill. After graduating from high school in 1935, she entered the Congregation and made her first profession in 1937. After ministering as an elementary school teacher, she was sent to the Rosary College Graduate School of Fine Arts, Villa Schifanoia in Florence, Italy, for five years to teach and study art. It was there that she developed her passion for painting in watercolor. Upon her return to the USA, she served as art faculty at Edgewood College in Madison, Wis. In 1988, along with three other Sister artists, she opened Veritas Studio at Edgewood and devoted her time to creating. She had multiple exhibits in Madison-area galleries before coming to the Motherhouse at Sinsinawa Mound in 2005 where she continued to produce art until her move to St. Dominic Villa where she died in 2010.

Sinsinawa Mound, an event center and Motherhouse of the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters in Wisconsin, is about five miles northeast of Dubuque, Ia., and 10 miles northwest of Galena, Ill. The new main entrance is located at the intersection of County Roads Z and ZZ. Sinsinawa Mound Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM.
