From May 8 to June 26, Sinsinawa Mound Art Gallery will feature the exhibit “Threads of Light: The Art of Sister Milla Derby, OP” at Sinsinawa Mound Center. An opening reception will be held Friday, May 8 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM with a gallery talk by Promoter of Arts and Cultural Heritage Sister Priscilla Wood, OP, at 5:30 PM. Step into a world of luminous color and Hawaiian island serenity with an exhibition celebrating the work of Sister Milla who was born in Honolulu.
A woman of remarkable creative range, Sister Milla first pursued music, sharing her gifts as a music educator within the Sinsinawa Dominican community. Her artistic journey later blossomed into a second vocation. After formal studies in art, she became a beloved member of the art faculty at Dominican University, River Forest, Ill., before returning to Honolulu where she established herself as a respected artist-in-residence. Sister Milla’s signature works—vivid compositions created with aniline dyes on silk—capture the lush landscapes and cultural spirit of Hawaii. Her pieces radiate warmth, movement, and reverence for the natural world. Her works invite viewers to experience the tranquil beauty and deep sense of place that define her art.
Sinsinawa Mound, an event center and Motherhouse of the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters in Wisconsin, is about five miles northeast of Dubuque, Ia., and 10 miles northwest of Galena, Ill. The new main entrance is located at the intersection of County Roads Z and ZZ. For more information and additional offerings visit Sinsinawa.org/moundcenter for more offerings.
