Art Classes Available at Sinsinawa Mound

Sister Isabel Rafferty

Discover your inner artist through two creative opportunities in May at Sinsinawa Mound Center. Artist in Residence Sister Isabel Rafferty, OP, will be hosting a Community Art Group: An Exploration of Color for those 55 and older Tuesdays May 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 10 AM to 12:30 PM. A $20 material fee will cover the cost of all four sessions. Attendees can bring their favorite brushes or use what is provided. Experience the joy of color through interplay of light and dark as participants explore hue, value, contrast, and mixing colors. Whether you are new to painting or looking to deepen skills, we offer a relaxed environment for learning, experimenting, and creating. The group will meet in the 4th Floor Art Room at Sinsinawa Mound Center.

Sister Isabel will also be hosting Open Studio days at Sinsinawa Mound Center Mondays May 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 9 AM to noon in the 4th Floor Art Room. Step into a space where creativity and contemplation meet, making Sinsinawa a unique, inspiring place to gather. Many artists find that the quiet, reflective atmosphere helps them slow down, focus, and connect more deeply with their work. Participants should bring their own art supplies, including an easel if preferred. (Due to chemical sensitivities, regular oil paints and solvents are not permitted.) Art boards are available for use. Open Studios are free of charge; however, space is limited so advance reservations are required. Space can be reserved through the events page on our website at Sinsinawa.org/moundcenter  or by emailing Chelsea Middendorf at cmiddendorf@sinsinawa.org.

Sister Isabel Rafferty is a Dominican Sister of Sinsinawa and the current Artist in Residence at Sinsinawa Mound. With an academic background including a BS, MAAT, and MFA, she has spent her career exploring the intersection of creativity, healing, and education. Her diverse professional journey ranges from elementary education and clinical art therapy to her many years as professor at Edgewood University, where she taught digital art and design to undergraduates. Though her teaching spanned the digital realm, her personal practice is anchored in the luminous depth of water-soluble oils. Many of her paintings reflect a lifelong dedication to finding the extraordinary within the natural world and the human spirit.

Sinsinawa Mound, an event center and Motherhouse of the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters in Wisconsin, is about five miles northeast of Dubuque, Ia., and 10 miles northwest of Galena, Ill. The new main entrance is located at the intersection of County Roads Z and ZZ. For more information and additional offerings visit Sinsinawa.org/moundcenter for more offerings.
