The rise of extremism in the United States has in some movements been linked to a religious purity that imposes on the rights of many Americans in multiple ways. One such movement often described as Christian nationalism promotes the idea that the United States should be defined exclusively as a Christian nation and that the government should enforce religious and moral views. This discussion will critically examine Christian nationalism and how it has been associated with policies and attitudes connected to racism, patriarchy, and the limitation of civil rights. This discussion will foster informed reflection and dialogue about the implications of this movement for democracy, religious freedom, and pluralism.
Frank King is an associate professor in ethnic studies and the program coordinator where he teaches intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and religion. His areas of specialization are hip hop pedagogy, the prison industrial complex, afro-centric philosophy, and African American history. He is currently working on a second edition of his book, From Here to There: An Introduction to Race, Gender, and Class in the U.S. This Lunch & Learn is part of an endowed series on social justice issues at Sinsinawa Mound Center and is generously supported by Eileen Willenborg.
