Sinsinawa Mound remains closed to the public for an indefinite period of time for all concerts, meetings, and tours. Many retreats, workshops, and prayer services have been either moved to a virtual venue or will be sponsored on site for small groups in a designated area of the building with social distancing and mask requirements in place. Virtual Lenten Retreat with Dan Schutte – Mar. 1-Apr. 1 @ Available Anytime
Dan Schutte is providing 18 musical reflection videos that are accessible online anytime during the retreat. Plus, participants will join Schutte in a Zoom conversation at 7 PM on Thursday, Mar. 25. Reflection themes include What God Can Do with Dust, Lured by Love, When Night Is Long, Our Same Old Sins, Wounded by Grace, We’re in This Together, and the Journey to Jerusalem. Registration will remain open through March 10. A downloadable workbook/prayer journal is included.
The Driftless Oaks: A History of Climate, Environment, and People from the Rings of Trees – Wednesday, Mar. 3 @ 7 PM-8 PM
Evan Larson and Chris Underwood will share stories, photographs, and scientific results from a decade of tree-ring research conducted in collaboration with their geography students at UW-Platteville and at sites across the Driftless Area. The primary focus of this presentation will be the Driftless Oaks project, a seven-year effort that recently culminated in the publication of a 303-year reconstruction of drought for southwest Wisconsin, with additional highlights from recent work developing multiple eastern red cedar tree-ring records that span the past seven centuries of climate and land use.
Lenten Series: On Pilgrimage—Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton – Saturday, Mar. 6 & 20 @ 10 AM-11 AM
Catholic Worker movement cofounder Dorothy Day and Trappist monk Thomas Merton are two of the most significant spiritual figures of the 20th century, uniting a passion for the interior life with efforts toward social transformation. They were also friends and correspondents. This retreat will explore their intersecting journeys as well as how those journeys might inspire how we live more faithfully today. Sign up for one or both remaining sessions. Eric Anglada will facilitate. Topics include Life of Prayer (March 6) and Love in Action (March 20).
Effigy Mounds: An Interview with David Barland-Liles – Wednesday, Mar. 10 @ 7 PM-8 PM
Effigy Mounds National Monument contains more than 200 earth mounds, the highest concentration of mounds in the world, some as old as 2,500 years. In this interview, Barland-Liles will discuss the magic of the effigy mounds, the history of the land, the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act, his building relationships with Native Nations, and the investigation he led into a much-publicized federal crime that happened on site. Barland-Liles, a law enforcement officer for the National Park Service for 25 years, protects indigenous sacred sites and is an expert in enforcing indigenous civil rights and resource protection laws.
Ho-Chunk History: Past, Present, and Future in the Driftless Area – Tuesday, Mar. 16 @ 7 PM-8 PM
William “Naawacekgize” Quackenbush, a member of the Deer Clan and Tribal Historic Preservation Office, will speak about the continual presence of the Ho-Chunk in the Driftless Area.
Slavery and Bondage in the Driftless – Saturday, Mar. 27 @ 10 AM-11 AM
Despite the Northwest Ordinance’s 1787 prohibition of slavery and involuntary servitude, African American and African French people labored in bondage in the Wisconsin-Illinois lead district for white masters and mistresses. Facilitator Jennifer Stinson weaves together census records, settler memoirs, legal documents, county histories, maps, and photographs to tell the stories of the unfree men, women, and children who toiled and resisted in and around Sinsinawa Mound.
While the Mound is closed to visitors, Sinsinawa Bakery remains open for online ordering at Sinsinawa.org/bakery and Sinsinawa Book & Gift Gallery is available for online purchases at Sinsinawa.org/giftgallery. Customers can also place orders by calling (608) 748-4411. Items can be shipped or customers can arrange for curbside pickup between 10 AM and 4 PM, Monday through Friday.

International Women’s Day seems an appropriate occasion to celebrate Sister Thea Bowman, an African American born in 1937 in Yazoo City, Mississippi, whose life’s mission was to share her rich cultural heritage and the Gospel of Jesus Christ through song, prayer, teaching, and preaching. $6 for discussion, does not include book. Scripture In Times of Disruption – Wednesdays, Mar. 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31 @ 7 PM
We are currently living in a time in which we are experiencing disruption in every aspect of our lives and in every nation on earth. The Scripture in Times of Disruption series offers an opportunity for people to encounter the Bible anew and consider its connection to their own lives. Sr. Sarah is a scripture scholar with a PhD from Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and an MA from Catholic Theological Union. She has served as an adjunct professor at Loras College and Wartburg Theological Seminary.
