Sculpture Entries Sought for Art on the River Public Art Program

The City of Dubuque is soliciting sculpture submissions for the 2020-21 Art on the River public art sculpture exhibit, to be held along the Mississippi Riverwalk in the Port of Dubuque. “Resilient Earth” has been selected as the theme for the 2020-21 exhibit, in conjunction with nationwide celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and statewide programming inspired by the 100th anniversary of the State of Iowa parks system.

Existing sculptures, as well as concept proposals for new sculptural work, are encouraged. Both permanent and temporal/semi-permanent works will be considered. Successful applications will propose sculptures that draw connections between the arts and earth sciences; speak to conservation, sustainability efforts, or environmental stewardship; highlight the natural beauty of the Mississippi River; or speak to the resiliency of the natural world, especially the Mississippi River.

Ten sculptural works will be selected for this 15th anniversary exhibition, to be displayed at the Port of Dubuque from August 2020 to July 2021. Application is free and artists can submit completed works or those to be fabricated by Summer 2020 install dates. Artists can submit multiple sculptures for consideration but must complete a separate application for each artwork. Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. CST on Friday, May 1, 2020. Access to the online form can be found at cityofdubuque.org/AOTRapply.

Selected artists receive a $1,500 stipend for each work included in the exhibition. Additional cash prizes of $1,000 for Best in Show and $200 for People’s Choice are also available. Artworks are encouraged to be for sale as the City makes special efforts to promote purchasing throughout the year. The City coordinates all financial transactions related to sales of artwork and retains a 25 percent commission of the retail price.

More information is available at cityofdubuque.org/artontheriver or by contacting City of Dubuque Arts & Cultural Affairs Coordinator Jenni Petersen-Brant at jbrant@cityofdubuque.org or (563) 690-6059.
