Loras College students continued their long history of success in the Delta Epsilon Sigma (DES) National Writing competition, earning first, second and honorable mention finishes. For the past 26 years, at least one Loras student has received first, second, or honorable mention in at least one category. 2019 marks the fourth consecutive year Loras students garnered awards in four genres.
Anna Girgenti (’18) from Rockford, Ill., earned first in the poetry category with “An American Portrait.” Caroline Breitbach (’20), of Peoria, Ill., took first place in the short fiction category with “Drop-Offs.” Woodstock, Ill. native Brennan Pivnicka (’18) claimed honorable mention in creative non-fiction for “On Not Shooting a Coyote”.
Maria Teets (’18) of Iowa City, Iowa, brought home an honorable mention in the critical/analytical essay for “Intertextual/Feminist Approach to Eavan Boland’s The Pomegranate.”
Each work was written while the students were undergraduates during the 2017-2018 academic year.
Students submit work each year to Loras’ undergraduate writing publication, “The Limestone Review.” Faculty choose the best work in each category for the Alpha Award. Those winners then go on to compete in the DES writing competition.
Delta Epsilon Sigma was founded in 1938 at Loras College by The Rev. E.A. Fitzgerald as a Catholic honor society. As a result, the college became the first DES chapter in the nation.
