Raising Cancer Awareness as Number of Survivors Grows

The American Cancer Society uses the term cancer survivor to refer to anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer no matter where they are in the course of their disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 18 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive on January 1, 2022. They do not reflect the impact of diagnostic and treatment delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Information is based on available prepandemic, observed cancer incidence, mortality, and survival data through 2018. The number of cancer survivors continues to grow in the United States, primarily as a result of the combined effects of a growing and aging population as well as advances in early detection and treatment. The three most prevalent cancers are prostate, melanoma of the skin, and colon and rectum.

Regular screening increases the chances of detecting certain cancers early, before cancer has a chance to spread. It’s important to follow recommendations for cancer screening tests. Screening tests are used to find cancer in people who have no symptoms. Regular screening gives you the best chance of finding cancer early when it’s small and before it has spread.

Our annual section on cancer includes information from our local health care institutions on the following: the importance of early detection, most asked questions and answers, immunotherapy treatments, skin cancer, nutrition as well as holistic approaches to help maintain a quality life.
