Project Rooted, in partnership with Northeast Iowa RC&D, will pilot a farm to school program called “The Rooted Box.” This initiative will expose K-5 classrooms in Dubuque Community and Western Dubuque Community School Districts to: locally procured snacks, experiential nutritional education, an interactive introduction to local food production, and skills and tools to instill future healthy habits.
The project programming will center around individual snack boxes which allow students to “DIY” snacks and staff to use associated engaging activities/curriculum to learn about personal health, local food systems and community.
In an effort to initiate the program at the 2021-2022 school start date, Project Rooted will begin outreach with school administration and staff at Dubuque Community and Western Dubuque Community School Districts to initiate conversations, plan and implement this pilot program within classrooms across the county.
