Iowa Early Literacy Group Announces Picture Book Award Winner

The Carnegie-Stout Public Library, in partnership with the Youth Services Subdivision of the Iowa Library Association, are proud to announce the 2021 Bridge to Reading Picture Book Award to The Yawns Are Coming by Christopher Eliopoulos, published by Dial Books for Young Readers (2020).

Ten picture books were selected for the final ballot by a committee of librarians, teachers, and early literacy leaders. And with the help of parents, caregivers, and educators across the state of Iowa, more than 3,000 kindergarten and preschool children voted for their favorite between Feb. 1 and April 30, 2021.

The Bridge to Reading Picture Book Award was originally developed at the Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque, IA as an initiative of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. The award has since grown state-wide and is now overseen by the Youth Services Subdivision of the Iowa Library Association with the purpose to promote early literacy and reading to children through the introduction of quality picture books.
