Applicants Sought for Dubuque’s First Ward City Council Vacancy

The Dubuque City Council is accepting applications from Dubuque’s first ward residents interested in filling the City Council vacancy created by the resignation of First Ward Council Member Brett Shaw.

The City Council voted to fill the vacancy by appointment. This appointment will last until the next regular election which will be held on November 2, 2021. First ward residents interested in being considered for appointment must submit a letter of interest and/or resume to the City Clerk’s Office, 50 W. 13 St., Dubuque, IA 52001 or at ctyclerk@cityofdubuque.org by noon on Monday, July 20, 2020. To view a map of Dubuque’s first ward, visit www.cityofdubuque.org/ward1map or call the Dubuque County Elections Office at (563) 589-4457 to verify a specific address. The City Council will conduct individual interviews at a special virtual meeting on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at 6:00 PM. The appointment will be made at the special session/work session on July 27, 2020.

The electors of the first ward have the right to file a petition requiring that the vacancy be filled by a special election with the City Clerk within 14 days of the publication of Notice of Intent to Fill a Vacancy by Appointment or within 14 days of the actual appointment. A petition requesting a special election to fill the vacancy would have to be signed by at least 157 first ward electors and be filed with the City Clerk by July 27, which is 14 days following the publication of Notice of Intent to Fill a Vacancy by Appointment; or by August 10, which is 14 days following the date of actual appointment. If such a petition is received after the appointment is made on Monday, July 23, the appointment would be temporary, and the City Council would call a special election to fill the vacancy until the next regular election.
