Over the past four years, you’ve no doubt noticed colorful murals – more than 40 of them – springing up on the walls of buildings in downtown Dubuque. But have you spotted the new murals currently being added to the cityscape? Did they make you pause and think? That’s the hope as art and culture take a positive step forward, becoming a voice for change.
“The Voices group has decided to name the new chapter of murals Voices Unite,” said Sam Mulgrew, director of the Voices Productions mural initiative. “They are intended to draw attention to a moment in time – what’s going on now. We hope that through the disruption of the visual order we can facilitate fresh thinking about who we are and who we want to become as a community. Silence, in light of injustice and flagrant inequalities, is no longer a tenable option.”
