Some of the most promising advances in cancer research in recent years involve treatments known as immunotherapy. Unlike chemotherapy that directly kills cancer cells, immunotherapy helps your immune system fight cancer. Immunotherapy helps patients fight cancer by stimulating their immune systems to work harder, or smarter, to attack cancer cells, or by giving their immune system components, such as man-made immune system proteins. Immunotherapy works better for some types of cancer than for others.
