Germany is a land long known for wine. Regions such as the Mosel, the Nahe, the Rheingau, the Baden and the Ahr are but a few of the prime wine-producing districts in Germany. Most of the wine-growing regions are concentrated in the south and southwestern part of Germany. These are among the most northerly wine regions in the world and are affected by the humid Gulf Stream climate of the west and the dry Continental climate of the east. Principle wines from Germany include Riesling, especially from the Mosel Valley; Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Gris); Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir); Dornfelder – often used as a blending grape, but can be used as a single varietal; and Lemberger, which can be light and fruity to rich in color, tannin, and flavor.

Fortunately, Natalie and I spent the first days of our trip in this southwest region of Germany and had the opportunity to try as many regional wines as possible.
