Student interest in Northeast Iowa Community College’s Z-courses has soared this fall semester, exceeding enrollment targets for the 2018-19 academic year and generating cost savings for students.
The College’s Z-courses are eight-week online sessions that have replaced textbooks with free open educational resources (OER). By using OER instructional materials and texts that are digitally accessible within the College’s Brightspace learning management system, students are not required to purchase textbooks. Students have saved an estimated $47,000 by taking Z-courses.
The Z-course sessions are components of a new Liberal Arts Associate’s Z-Degree launched in August; however, Z-courses are available for open enrollment by all students. As of October 1, there were 410 enrollments in the 12 current online Z-courses, according to the Online & Blended Learning department that designed the courses. The department planned on 420 total enrollments for the entire 2018-19 academic year.
The two Z-course sessions in spring 2019 begin on January 14 and March 18. The summer 2019 session begins May 21. For more information on the courses available, visit NICC.edu/latestart.
