Megan Ruiz is the new executive director of the Presentation Lantern Center in Dubuque. The Presentation Lantern Center offers hospitality, advocacy, and education to adult immigrants, including tutoring in English language skills and citizenship test preparation.
Ruiz has a master’s degree in education and teaching English as a second or other language. She has completed graduate-level coursework in business, English, cultural and linguistic diversity, and has experience in leadership roles, community service, and grant writing. Previously, she served as an academic advisor and disability services coordinator, as well as an instructor for the University of Dubuque.
Her passion for working with immigrants started in college when she volunteered as a conversation partner for University of Northern Iowa’s Culture and Intensive English program. Her commitment grew through the years as an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and special education teacher as well as a tutor and resource coordinator for immigrants and refugees.
The Presentation Lantern Center was founded 15 years ago by the Sisters of the Presentation who continue to sponsor the organization. Ruiz is the third executive director in the organization’s history.
