“Heal Your Grief” is a retreat designed to help heal the hearts of those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Mary Potter Kenyon, certified grief counselor and author of Refined by Fire: A Journey of Grief and Grace, and Ellen Bigelow, leader of the Dubuque Compassionate Friends group, are coordinating the event. The retreat will be held on Friday, November 2, and Saturday, November 3 at Shalom Spirituality Center, 1001 Davis St., Dubuque.
Friday keynote speaker is September Vaudrey, author of Colors of Goodbye, a book chronicling the loss of her artist daughter. Cost to attend is $15 per person or $20 per couple.
A Vision Board workshop will be held at 7:30 p.m., facilitated by national grief speaker Mitch Carmody and TOPPS artist Steve Potter. Designed to help attendees visualize life in the absence of the loved one, the activity utilizes bulletin boards, magazines, and inspirational messages to create a visual reminder of what their loved one would want for them. Cost is $18 per person and includes all materials.
Saturday’s retreat begins at 8:30 a.m. with a song from Christian singer Anna Nuzzo, followed by keynote speaker Mitch Carmody on “Proactive Grieving,” living with loss and choosing to be transformed by it. Attendees choose from workshops that include “Expressive Writing for Healing,” “Grief and the Marriage Relationship” with Terry and Patti Cullen, “Rock painting” with author Jeannie Ewing, and roundtable discussions. The afternoon concludes with Mitch Carmody’s “Whispers of Love,” at 3:30. Cost for Saturday is $50, lunch included.
An overnight option is available, with Saturday breakfast. See the Heal Your Grief page on MaryPotterKenyon.com for more information. Registration is through Eventbrite.com under “Heal Your Grief.” Contact Mary Potter Kenyon at email@example.com with questions or to apply for a partial scholarship.
