UnityPoint Health® Finley Hospital Now Offers Home Sleep Tests

UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital now offers home sleep tests for individuals suffering from various sleep disorders. A sleep study is a test that records what happens to your body during sleep. The study is non-invasive and lasts from six to eight hours, depending on normal sleep hours. During the sleep study, chest movements, breathing and airflow patterns, heart rates, and oxygen levels are measured.

“Offering home sleep studies is just one other way how Finley is trying to make health care access easier for individuals,” explains Vickie Rahe, Director of Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Sleep Lab, and EEG at Finley. “Now we can work with patients on the best place for them to have their sleep study performed – whether it’s in our Sleep Center or at home.”

According to the American Sleep Association, 50-70 million US adults have a sleep disorder. A sleep study can help in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, snoring, and restless sleep. Sleep disorders can also lead to other health issues such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. If you have any signs or symptoms of a sleep disorder, including snoring, irregularities in breathing during sleep, restless sleep, it is important to get an evaluation.

If you think you’d benefit from a sleep study, talk to your primary care provider about your symptoms. A doctor’s order is required for all sleep tests. Once that is received, patients will schedule their home sleep test similar to scheduling an appointment at Finley’s Sleep Center. Upon the appointment date, patients will get the information and equipment needed to perform the sleep study in their home. Once the test is complete, the device is returned, data from the sleep study is sent to a sleep doctor who interprets the data and provides an official diagnosis. Test results and follow up information are sent to the primary care provider within 5-7 business days.
