The Multicultural Family Center (MFC) is offering a free tutoring program focusing on current 8th-12th grade students needing assistance in the areas of Math, Science, and Mandarin (Chinese).
This drop-in style tutoring program will be offered Monday-Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The program will start February 5 and continue through May 3, 2018. Additional support may be available after May 3 if necessary.
The tutors are college students, teachers, and community members who bring experience, expertise, and enthusiasm to the program. The MFC interviews and conducts background checks on all volunteer tutors.
Students will work with their tutors and interact with each other in small groups to master specific subjects. The goal is for students to build relationships with their peers as well as gain guidance in the subject from the tutors. Students are expected to bring their homework, textbooks, and/or study materials to each meeting with their tutor.
Students in the program will:
- deepen their understanding of course material
- practice problems with the guidance of tutors and peers
- develop necessary study and test-taking skills
- set goals to increase academic performance.
Tutoring Program Coordinator Laura Ting has recently received a Master of Communication Degree from the University of Dubuque (UD). She also graduated with a Master of Curriculum and Instruction, M.Ed. from West Texas A&M State University. Laura has been an MFC Volunteer Tutor for over one year.
