Dr. Andrew J. Petto from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will give a presentation titled “Descent with Modification: If You Can Doubt It, Thank Evolution!” during a special Evolution Weekend event at Clarke University on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
The presentation takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Jansen Music Hall on the Clarke campus. Admission is free.
Petto will give a brief refresher on scientific inquiry and the facts of evolution before focusing on research concerning why scientists have had difficulty convincing the general public about the usefulness and importance of these ideas. This will be followed by a panel discussion including Petto and Clarke faculty members Bill Gregory, associate professor of Religious Studies, and Tom Riley, professor of Philosophy.
Petto, senior lecturer in Biosciences at UW-Milwaukee, is co-editor of Scientists Confront Creationism. His teaching and research interests are in promoting the understanding of nature and the process of scientific inquiry as a context for the factual information that scientific research generates.
