The University of Dubuque received a $5,000 Dubuque Racing Association (DRA) Grant in support of the 2016-2017 Live at Heritage Center SchoolBus Performance Series. Grant support will focus on the first three presentations of the season:
- October 21 – Peter Rabbit Tales by Enchantment Theatre Company (Philadelphia, PA)
- November 15 – Step Afrika! (Washington, D.C.)
- December 6 – Let’s Go Science Show (Santa Rosa, CA)
Launched in 2014, the SchoolBus series is an annual daytime field trip program that provides learning opportunities for public, private, homeschool, and accredited preschool/daycare students primarily in pre-k through eighth-grade. It consists of one-hour performing arts presentations featuring nationally touring professional and guest artists, with the majority of the performances bringing children’s literature to life on stage. The SchoolBus series aims to assist in the intellectual, emotional, and social development of area schoolchildren through the use of corresponding classroom curriculum. Performances occur in Heritage Center’s John and Alice Butler Hall. The 2016-2017 Live at Heritage SchoolBus Performance series will reach over 10,000 students and educators.
DRA’s support will offset guest artist’s contractual fees and lodging costs. It will also enable Heritage Center to offer a limited number of discounted and free admissions to select events when schools lack funding for field trips. The DRA and associated casinos, Mystique Casino and Diamond Jo Casino, are partners in this grant support. Mystique Casino is owned by the City of Dubuque and is run under the guidance of the Dubuque Racing Association. Profits from both casinos go to the City and area charitable organizations, and gaming taxes provide revenue for the city, county, and state.
