State Recognizes 2015 Sesqicentennial Activities

Nancy Breed (left), executive director, Galena-Jo Daviess County Historical Society, and Marge Cooke, co-chair of the April 2015 Civil War Sesquicentennial events, receive an Award of Excellence from the Illinois State Historical Society’s Professor Chris McDonald during an annual meeting and awards luncheon at the Old State Capitol Building in Springfield. (Co-chair Mary Jo Losey was unable to attend.)

The Sesquicentennial events were the result of a two-year process of coordination, supported by 12 sub-committees of volunteers from throughout the Galena community. Local award-winning director, Ronn Toebaas, wrote and produced a feature-length dramatic play, titled “Peace in Union,” featuring 42 local actors and musicians. Over a span of seventeen days, top-level educational programming was enjoyed by more than 2,500 attendees. Volunteers contributed an estimated 6,240 hours to the success of this once-in-a-lifetime community commemoration.
