University of Dubuque Army ROTC Cadet Lt. Col. Paul Beard, of Dubuque, was one of eight students across Iowa selected to receive the Reserve Officer Training Corps Governor’s Cup ROTC Award for outstanding achievement.

Beard, a senior aviation management major who serves as the ROTC cadet battalion commander, said he was honored and humbled to be selected for the award.

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds presented the awards Thursday, April 7, at the Capitol. The annual awards recognize the top students in ROTC programs at Iowa universities.

Retired Army Col. Dan Kammiller, military science faculty and ROTC recruiter at the UD, described Beard as a top cadet with the leadership skills to ensure other cadets are on task.

Beard joined the ROTC to further his career in the Iowa Army National Guard. In May, he will commission as a second lieutenant in the Army Aviation Branch. His first duty assignment as an aviation officer in the Iowa Army National Guard will be in Davenport, Iowa, where he will pilot CH-47 Chinook helicopters.
