Marie Fitzgerald, innkeeper of Four Mounds Bed and Breakfast, was recognized as Iowa Lodging Association’s (ILA) Innkeeper of the Year Award at ILA’s annual Stars of the Industry awards banquet on November 1. Fitzgerald has been an innkeeper for 30 years, with over half of those spent at Four Mounds in Dubuque, IA. She also served on the Iowa Bed and Breakfast Guild’s governing committee for four years.
As an innkeeper, Fitzgerald is the heart of Found Mounds Bed and Breakfast. She is also the force behind successful business breakfasts and lunches, various conferences, special dinners, concerts, and weddings that take place there.
Fitzgerald started her career in innkeeping when she and her husband transformed a lovely Victorian house in Lansing, IA into Fitzgerald’s Bed and Breakfast. After 11 years, the family moved to Dubuque where she began her career at Four Mounds. The last remaining Gentleman’s Farm in Iowa, the property overlooks the Mississippi River and features three houses for guests to enjoy. It is operated as a nonprofit by the Four Mounds Foundation.
