July 26th, 2015 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Celebrations of the signing of the ADA by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990 are taking place across the nation, and Hills & Dales is proud to be participating. The ADA and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) give civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. The ADA and ADAAA also assure equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities for access to businesses, employment, transportation, state and local government programs and services, and telecommunications.
Hills & Dales is encouraging the people the organization supports – staff, families, volunteers, and the community – to visit www.adaanniversary.org to sign and Pledge On! to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Become a part of the nationwide ADA celebration and show your commitment to the ADA throughout the year.
The timing of the celebration and encouragement to Pledge On! correlates with the upcoming visit to Hills & Dales by U.S. Congressman Rod Blum on July 31. The congressman will be touring both the Residential Center and Community Center in Dubuque, and meeting with staff to learn more about the various services that are in place to support people of all ages and abilities.
The mission of Hills & Dales is to build meaningful lives for individuals with disabilities by offering services that support the whole person and enhance community inclusion. The organization has been providing supports and services to individuals with disabilities in Dubuque and Northeast Iowa for over 40 years.
