The American Cancer Society Relay For Life Dubuque was proud to announce Laura Virtue as this year’s Honorary Survivor Chair. Virtue was introduced as the survivor chair the evening of the relay, which was held this year in Washington Park.
In June of 2010, Laura was diagnosed at Acute Care with Non Hodgkin Lymphoma. After a biopsy later that week, Laura found out she had a rare and aggressive form of cancer called Primary Mediastinal B-cell Lymphoma (PMBCL).
Laura visited with Dr. Mark Hermann and with his guidance received a second opinion at the University of Iowa hospitals. Both Dr. Hermann and those in Iowa City were wonderful, but had different opinions on how to treat Laura’s cancer. After much thought and prayers, Laura chose to stay in Dubuque for 12 weeks of treatment. By the end of September that year Laura had a clear PET scan!
A Kindergarten teacher at Irving Elementary, Laura tries to live in the moment with her beautiful family and friends. Since beating cancer, she became pregnant at age 40 and had a beautiful miracle baby boy named Gideon.
