University of Dubuque’s Heritage Center continues its fifth annual Live at Heritage Center Performing Arts Series with Take 6 on Wednesday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. in John and Alice Butler Hall. Heralded by Quincy Jones as the “baddest vocal cats on the planet,” Take 6 is the quintessential a cappella group and model for vocal genius. Six virtuosic voices united in crystal clear harmony against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms, innovative arrangements, and funky grooves that bubble into an intoxicating brew of gospel, jazz, R&B and pop.
Take 6 is recognized as the pre-eminent a cappella group in the world. The multi-platinum selling sextet have toured around the globe and collaborated across genres. Since their self-titled debut CD won over jazz and pop critics in 1998, Take 6 has received 24 Grammy nominations in the genres of gospel, jazz, R&B, and pop. They have recorded and/or performed with an impressive array of talent, past and present, including Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Al Jarreau, Don Henley, James Taylor, k.d. lang, Patti Austin, Randy Travis, Queen Latifah, Sheryl Crow, Branford Marsalis, and BeBe & CeCe Winans. Take 6 has performed on Saturday Night Live, the Oscars, and the Grammys. Additionally, they have had the honor of performing for four U.S. presidents.
Take 6 knows no bounds. Since signing with Reprise Records in 1987, Take 6 has become the most awarded a cappella group in history. They have earned 10 Grammys, 10 Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association, Best Jazz Vocal Group honors for seven consecutive years in DownBeat magazine’s prestigious Readers Poll and Critics Poll, two NAACP Image Award nominations, a Soul Train Music Award, Black Radio Exclusive Vocal Group of the Year, induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and countless other musical and humanitarian citations.
In 2016, Take 6 achieved a career high when their release of “Believe” simultaneously landed on six Billboard charts in its opening week: No. 2 Contemporary Jazz Chart, No. 5 Current Jazz, No. 9 Current Gospel, No. 25 Current R&B Albums, No. 41 Christian/Gospel Albums, and No. 58 Current R&B/Hip Hop. The release of “Believe” was hailed by critics and fans alike.
As Take 6 celebrates 30 years in the business, they share the memories in the music of years past as well as reveal what the future holds. Members of Take 6 insist faith, friendship, respect, and love of music are the reasons for their success all these years. Those qualities remain at the heart of the Take 6 phenomenon and fuel them to continue sharing their expression with the rest of the world.
Prior to the concert, the UD Gospel Choir will present live music from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Heritage Center’s CyberCafé Knapp Stage. The performance is free of charge.
