The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra (DSO) presents the fourth in its 2016-17 Season of the Arts series: Music in Movies. This program combines some of the great film scores of John Williams (Star Wars and Harry Potter) with one of the most beautiful and well-loved symphonic favorites, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a work inspired by the stories of the Arabian Nights (Aladdin, Sinbad the Sailor…).
Local saxophone master Allen Cordingley is featured in the jazzy music from the film Catch Me If You Can. Allen is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and founding member of the Ensemble 135 trio, a dynamic chamber ensemble that maintains a vigorous schedule of recitals and concerts in the tri-state area.
The orchestra performed Tragedy Tomorrow by Dubuque-native Michael Gilbertson in 2012, and this wonderful work, inspired by photographs of New York City in the 1920’s, is being “encored”. His works have been described as “vivid, tightly woven” by the Baltimore Sun, and “genuinely moving” by the Washington Post. Gilbertson holds degrees from The Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music, serves as artistic director of ChamberFest Dubuque, and has taught the Northeast Iowa School of Music, and a lecturer at the Yale School of Music.
